A rustic process of textile printing – block printing – uses wooden blocks for imprinting images or patterns on fabric. This method is widely used in various parts of Asia, including India and China. The process of block printing begins with the creation of the block design, which requires sketching a unique pattern and then etching out the wood to create a wooden block that can be smeared with ink to imprint the fabric.

Block printing, depending on the desired result, can be extremely simple or very complex. This means the number of blocks needs to create a particular design can vary. For example, in some designs, you will see the same patterns through its length, while others, will have a detailed border, and a different print elsewhere. Some of the most popular block prints that you will see, as well as find in our online saree collection are:

  • Ajrakh (block printed cloth with deep crimson red and indigo blue background)
  • Dabu (a mud-resist technique with multiple stages of printing, washing and dyeing – the final result is often likened to batik)
  • Bagru (typical of a small village in Rajasthan, the distinctive pattern is often seen on a dark background)
  • Sanghaneri (most commonly depicted as the same, likely to be floral, motif across the length of the fabric, on a light/white background)

At Aditri, we understand the importance of having a complete saree collection, one that boasts of heritage styles suited to the contemporary woman.
