Description
Kantha work in itself is a revelation, but when you see it this cream base cornflower blue avatar with Warli motifs, you’re sure to be spellbound. Embroidered on bishnupur silk, this saree is as versatile as it is beautiful. The intricate work ensures that you can wear it to a formal occasion while its color palette makes it suitable for day wear as well!
The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, living in mountainous as well as coastal areas of Maharashtra-Gujarat border and surrounding areas. They have their own animistic beliefs, life, customs, and traditions, as a result of acculturation, they have adopted many Hindu beliefs.
Everything about Warli motifs is earthy and soothing. It takes you back to the motifs provenance where you could almost smell the wet soil, feel the touch of the calloused hand & the meticulous craftsmanship of our weavers who created this masterpiece. The Warli motifs use a very basic graphic vocabulary: a circle, a triangle, and a square. These motifs are monosyllabic. The circle and triangle come from the tribe’s observation of nature, the circle representing the sun and the moon, the triangle derived from mountains and pointed trees. Only the square seems to obey a different logic and seems to be a human invention, indicating a sacred enclosure or a piece of land.
Warli art form has succeeded in adding elegance to a rural hut or a saree to a five-star hotel lobby with the same charm.
A beautiful fabric, often created by masterfully weaving together different fabrics to create a distinct look characterized by its colorful, wrinkled and wavy avatar. A piece of art in many ways, Kantha tells a story of creativity, imagination, and care. Kantha, or the running stitch, is an indigenous household craft that was pioneered by the women in rural West Bengal. The Kantha weave is meant to tell a story, in that one is unlikely to find two similar pieces of original Kantha.
In many ways, the heritage-laden Kantha has been adapted to suit the modern-day and appeal to a larger audience, spread across the country. From shawls to pillowcases to hats to bedsheets, Kantha has cleverly evolved, making it a classic and yet effective way to make a genuine style statement. We’ve brought Kantha to your home, where you can browse through our unique collection of Kantha sarees and dupattas online, in the comfort of your own private space, and choose which piece of art to make your own!
